.Happy Birthday Arcana Unearthed!

Monte Cook's Arcana Unearthed is one year old now! It's high time we talked to some of you about how your campaigns are going. All of the quotes presented below come from players and DMs who submitted them through the Monte Cook's Arcana Unearthed official fan site, diamondthrone.com. Thanks, everyone, for writing in and sharing some of your own experiences with the game!

Illus. Mark Zug

From Oscar Tirado — Providence, RI, USA

"[My] party consists of runechildren: a mojh magister, giant unfettered, human hawk totem warrior, and litorian oathsworn led by a verrik mage blade and guided by a rune manifest. They haven't met her yet. Two were born with gifts, the others received them as adults. Some powers complement (hawk totem warrior's lesser beastskin), while others are hindered (magister was a former Fleshrunes cult member and can now heal). They are known as the Sigil and have done some minor selfless quests for good. Next they will seize a power cyst from a cabal of harrid...so stay tuned. Runechildren have come..."

Illus. Mark Zug

From Scott Shafer— Pine Bluff, AR, USA

"I run my family... My wife Polly runs a verrik wood witch, my daughter Sophie runs a quickling akashic, and my daughter Zoë runs a giant mage blade... well...until they all got killed by a couple of apes. Now we start something again..."

Illus. Mark Zug

From Genjuro Kitsuki — Vancouver, BC, Canada

"Well, I've been running an Arcana Unearthedgame for about eight months now, consisting of a faen lawyer (akashic/iron witch), human magister, human mage blade/darkbond, human akashic/mind witch, giant warmain, giant bear totem warrior/greenbond, and verrik greenbond. It's going pretty well, I've edited things along the way. They have their story goals, which I'm working into my overall story. They think the faen are all evil. For them it is a race to see who will gather all the staves of the magisters first."

From Benoist Poire — Waglisla, BC, Canada

"We are a group of fans gathering online through Enrill.net. We come from various places such as France, Canada, the United States, Germany, South Africa, even Cyprus! What do we enjoy the most about Monte Cook's Arcana Unearthed? The freedom it allows us to experiment and implement our own ideas and materials. What we needed was a stimulation of our imaginations. A starting point to build around it. Thank you, Monte, for giving it to us!"

Illus. Mark Zug

From Joseph Lockett — Houston, TX, USA

"We have the Ebonring, but we don’t trust any faction with it. It just opened the silvery sphere of frozen time near De-Shamod, revealing the castle of the Ring's creator. We hope to destroy the ring there."

Characters (5th level): Selwyn, female human Unf; Aeae-Kail, female giant Wrm; Chimar, male litorian Grn; Aldric, male human Mbl; Narlzeq, male verrik Aks. In real life, we are a high-school junior, a Montessori teacher, an anesthesiologist, and several technical types.

Illus. Mark Zug

From Derek Kupper — Austin, TX, USA

"We're running two parallel Arcana Unearthed games, set on a continent where the Dragons and Giants fought to a draw, then withdrew, leaving the land more chaotic than the Diamond Throne in general. We've run up to 9th level. Right now between the two groups we've got: two faen magisters, a litorian akashic, a giant totem warrior/beast reaver, an undead snake totem warrior, a verrik runethane, a mojh runethane, a human akashik/assassin, a litorian unfettered, a human mind witch, and a mojh wood witch. And we love it."

Luciano, Fabiano, Ewerton, Luiz Fernando, Guilherme, and Alex

From Luiz Fernando Budde — Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil

"Our group has been playing RPGs for about a decade now, and changing the game to Arcana Unearthed was great. In every session there is something new (and cool) to discover. As the DM, the Diamond Throne is providing me an enjoyable challenge! In our campaign, the characters teamed up with the ex-pirate Tellus Reed to rid the seas from a terrible curse. Now they are working as the High Steward’s agents, trying to prevent war between the Diamond Throne and Fallanor. After that they will travel to the Unknown West, not that 'unknown' now."

Illus. Mark Zug

From Søren Thustrup—Copenhagen, Denmark

"'Mojh are absolutely cool.' This statement sums up the feelings of one third of the group, Annette who plays Brynagoth the Mojh. Further, the idea of talents has in this campaign proven to be a crucial factor in character – and story line – development. The learning curve has been a bit steeper than it might have been with standard D&D, but the benefits – characters and abilities that break the mold of 'normal' fantasy roleplaying – have more than made up for any starting difficulties!"

Illus. Mark Zug

From Yan Duranceau— Lachine, Quebec, Canada

"We are veterans tired of the old ways. Arcana Unearthed gave us all we needed to fuel our dying fire. Arcana Unearthed oozes coolness and is truly a breath of fresh air for us all. Our campaign is based on Verdune's struggle with the undead and possibility of restoring Erdina to its glory. On a political level, the giants simply choose to ignore Verdune for it is said the Order of the Axe originated there. Characters are about to undertake a journey to plead with the Stewards, which will ensure the survival of this place."

Illus. Mark Zug

From Rob Bowell — Ocean Township, NJ, USA

"We are all between 25 and 35. Our Arcana Unearthed campaign is taking place in Xavel, where the PCs are part of the Diamond Throne's military and are dealing with an human insurgency movement called The Humanists."

Rob's characters can be found online.

Illus. Mark Zug

From Dimitri Kremmydas — Athens, Greece

"Arcana Unearthed is less generic fantasy (like D&D) and more ACTUAL fantasy. I always had trouble converting books to game. The problem was not the 'fighter' classes but the magic system. How can you play a wizard like Sparrowhawk who needs a mastery of names, or even like Gandalf who needs his staff? Arcana Unearthed dealt with a lot of these problems, and most importantly showed me how to work outside 'the box.' Thanks Monte. Can't wait to try out the Diamond Throne setting!"

The Cauldron Irregulars

From Jeremy Puckett — Lexington, KY, USA

"The Cauldron Irregulars are a mercenary group in the lands south of the Diamond Throne. Led by the human mage blade Tancred, the Cauldron Irregulars will work for anyone except slavers. Members include the loresong magister Anaphris Larkscry, the quickling (now spryte) winter witch, Thallen Icetongue, the verrik akashic Zybrc, the litorian mage blade Ramaton (recently departed the group under poor circumstances), Niko, a litorian champion of courage, and Io-Corral, an unbound giant unfettered."

Illus. Mark Zug

From Itzhak Even — Rehovot, Israel

"We recently started an Arcana Unearthed group set in a world where dragons are terrible overlords, and while the other races have small kingdoms they pay tributes to the dragons, or are destroyed. The group consists of a human mind witch, a verrik wolf totem warrior, a loresong magister and a quickling unfettered. The group's desire is to free the world from the iron grasp of the dragons."
