Getting Ready for Denmark

Viking-Con"Why aren't we playing next week?" members of my game group asked.

"I'm going to be at a convention," I replied.

"Oh. Where?"

"Denmark."

Eyes widened. Not because Denmark is strange in and of itself, but because the answer to that question is usually "Fort Wayne" or "Columbus" or some other mid-sized American city (for various reasons, the answer is never a very small U.S. city or a very large one like New York or LA). What's more, even when Americans in our industry talk about conventions in other countries, it's usually London or Essen.

I'm thrilled to be going to Viking-Con near Copenhagen. One of perks of this job has always been getting to travel all over to meet people and see new places as a guest of a convention. Getting to go to Denmark is amazing.

Honestly, Denmark might not have been a place I would have visited otherwise. I don't mean that in a mean-spirited way. I mean, if someone from Denmark was going to come to visit the U.S., I doubt many of them would head straight for the Seattle area, but I don't take offense at that. The world is a huge place. Most of us just don't get to see much of it, when you think about it. When someone like me does think about going to Europe, I think of Paris or the ruins of the Parthenon, just like when you think of the United States you think of New York City or maybe the Grand Canyon.

But that is, in fact, the beauty of this trip.

Sue and I are getting ready to go this week (I wouldn't expect a web update next week, if I were you). We're reading up on Copenhagen to find out what there is to see and do -- and the answer appears to be "a lot." And, of course, the focus of the trip is Viking-Con and meeting the Danish gamers who will be there. That should be a lot of fun.

I'm sure I'll have a lot to write about when I get back.
