Frivolous?
Exactly.
Most
of you reading this are from the United
States. But no matter where you are
from, you've heard about the terrible
things that have happened here. Even
in countries where terrorist attacks
are more common, the terrorist attacks
on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon
are catastrophic by anyone's standards.
It
seems a little pointless to blather
on about something gaming related here,
when things are so deadly serious in
the real world. I won't, for example,
post the rant that I was going to put
up this week. It doesn't have anything
to do with the events of the day, but
it just seems wrong to rant about anything
when so many people are being affected
by real horror.
But
then, perhaps that's when we need gaming
most of all. Because gaming is, well
-- just a game. That's the whole point,
in fact. It's escapist fantasy. A way
to take your mind off things for a while.
A way to relax.
So
even if you're feeling depressed and
angry, like I have been for the last
two days, don't forget entirely about
your passtime. Not because gaming is
vital or important, but because a bit
of escapism, a bit of fun, and a bit
of relaxation is vital and important.
If I didn't believe that, I'd be in
a different profession.
I
don't think it demeans the seriousness
of what has happened. Life has to go
on.
Both
Sue's and my thoughts are with the families
of the victims, the heroic rescue personnel,
and everyone in the nation -- for we
have all been affected by this tragedy.
I'll see you next week.
