Pulling
it All Together
With
the release of Book of
Eldritch Might III: The Nexus, Malhavoc Press
now has nine products out. In The Nexus, we provide
seven new settings that you can add to your campaign.
I thought it would be fun to think about how to use those
locales with our previous products.
Keeping
in mind that this article contains spoilers for the adventures,
here are some ideas:
Book
of Eldritch Might
You
can be sure that the Hedrudal, the arcanists that live
around the Tomb of Frozen Dreams, would be familiar with
the eldritch feats found in this book. In particular,
they might utilize etched object runes and item
images to good effect. (Some of the Hedrudal might even
be graven ones.) And perhaps a place filled with frozen
dreams would be the best place to learn the secrets of
Dreamspeaking.
The
various forces involved with the invasion from the Bastion
of the D'Stradi are sure to have discovered such spells
as flaming corrosion, coldscream, and electrical
deluge. Magical vehicles in this book, like the bulette
walker, the war altar, and the war throne,
might see use on the battlefields of Inshabiv, while the
psychic skiff would prove useful for anyone living
in the floating city of Sanneth, "The City in the
Storm."
Lastly,
the secrets to some of the minor spells, like enchanting
flavor, mental alarm, or minor ward, certainly
could be found in the market around the Pool of Glenmasis.
Demon
God's Fane
There's
surely an old, forgotten portal in the Nexus that leads
to the site of this ancient temple. It might even be that
Alikaba and her invasion force would like to find and
restore the Fane, earning Ochremeshk's
favor and aid in their war in Inshabiv.
As
a real twist, the village mentioned in Book of Eldritch
Might III, Banaton (in the Vale of Stars) could actually
become the village in the adventure, Golden Lake. That
would put the lake near the valley, and might suggest
that the Fane and Castle Arthanath had some interaction
in the past. Perhaps the castle was still sealed in the
time of the Fane, ancient even then, and Ochremeshk wanted
to get in -- and so he had his servants build his temple
where they did. Whether they ever did get in or not is
a matter of speculation.
If
Thoughts Could Kill
Again,
the Palace of the Azure Emperor found in this adventure
is a sure site where one might find a portal to and from
the Nexus. Some members of the new race in If Thoughts
Could Kill, the Kureshim, might be found in the Nexus
itself -- perhaps that is how they came to this world
to begin with.
Or
what if, as a means to fight off the D'Stradi demons,
the defenders in Inshabiv begin to use psionics (perhaps
even employing psionic mercenaries to help). You can bet
that the Alikaba will attempt to fight fire with fire,
so to speak, perhaps creating psionic liches or duncharaths
(both found in If Thoughts Could Kill).
It
also might be interesting to have the real secrets found
in Castle Arthanath, hidden away by the dragons, not be
sorcerous, but psionic. If you are looking for a way to
incorporate psionics in your campaign, having your players
discover it as a forbidden, ancient art might certainly
be a way to do it.
Book
of Eldritch Might II: Songs and Souls of Power
As
with the first Book of Eldritch Might, the eldritch
feats in this book are sure to have their place in the
repertoire of the Hedrudal, and the minor magic, like
quick boost and the loresight spells, can
be found at the Pool of Glenmasis. Forceblast and
spellmaster are also spells very much in the idiom
of the Hedrudal.
If
you are looking for a secret to place in Castle Arthanath,
soul magic may be your best bet. It's ancient, mysterious,
and magical. If not there, then place soul magic as a
secret kept by the Hedrudal in the Tomb of Frozen Dreams.
The
arcane angels found in Book of Eldritch Might II
may be part of the forces guarding Castle Arthanath, and
most likely watching over the Tomb of Frozen Dreams as
well. They almost certainly utilize the Nexus occasionally
to get from place to place.
Vabrin
the ettin, creator of the intelligent magic items in Book
of Eldritch Might III, would probably use eye golems
to watch over his forge. He'd also love to learn about
item-related spells like coax forth power, invigorate
item, or extended charge.
The
Banewarrens
The
dragons who built Castle Arthanath were some of the very
same allies who helped Danar Rotansin build the Banewarrens
so very long ago. In fact, legend has it that the key
to entering Arthanath lies somewhere in the Banewarrens
itself.
If
you're a fan of irony, you might place an item important
to the adventure, like the sealing rod or one of
the pieces of the staff of shards, in the hands
of a merchant at the Pool of Glenmasis.
Although
the city of Ptolus (where The Banewarrens is set)
most likely lies far from most of the locales discussed
in Book of Eldritch Might III, there could certainly
be a Nexus portal hidden somewhere in the city. The Inverted
Pyramid probably knows where it is. Such a portal could
make a side adventure to the City in the Storm or to the
Bastion of the D'Stradi possible -- perhaps to gain important
information about the Pactlords of the Quaan.
Lastly,
the medusa helm from Book of Eldritch Might
III would be a nice additional bane for the warrens.
Requiem
for a God
Any
of the locations in Book of Eldritch Might III
could become even more interesting if they were also near
the site of the death of a god. The Pool of Glenmasis
is not unlike such a site, where a powerful personage
died and bequeathed her energy to a place. Alter the story
a bit, make Glenmasis a minor deity, and utilize the rules
found in Requiem for loosed divinity and the corpus
dei (which might literally be the pool itself).
Fusing
divine energy into an item may be a great way to make
it intelligent. Vabrin the ettin, as he creates his new
kind of intelligent items (as described in Book of
Eldritch Might III), may be very interested in investigating
godsblood, loosed divinity, or even relocating his forge
to a place near a divinity well. (In fact, as a bit of
trivia, the rules for intelligent magic items were originally
supposed to go in Requiem for a God but were cut
for space. Originally, some sort of divine essence was
going to be required to create such an item.)
Skreyn's
Register: The Bonds of Magic, Cabal
(Note:
The print version of this book is coupled with The
Faithful.)
Obviously,
all the characters in this book or its companion, the
Faithful can be worked into any of the locales in Book
of Eldritch Might III: The Nexus. Here are a few ideas,
though:
Antat
Var and Chaz Zemir are found in the Vale of Stars, attempting
to learn anything they can about starlight magic -- but
not together. Chaz might even be selling the dao some
slaves in exchange for information.
Dar Halan leads a halfling mercenary unit fighting alongside
the defenders against the D'Stradi demons. Irrin Tol could
also be a mercenary fighting against the invaders.
Fanatrax
enlists the aid of the PCs to attempt to get inside Castle
Arthanath to learn the secrets of dragon magic.
Jaurdaan
spends time in the fey market at the Pool of Glenmasis
to find more magic that will help him hide his appearance.
Urn of the One Hand hangs around there as well, although
he's looking for something entirely different: an adventuring
group to join. Yewlanavae might come there from time to
time, looking for information.
Nosgrundanga
is a member of the Hedrudal.
Skreyn's
Register: The Bonds of Magic, The Faithful
(Note:
The print version of this book is coupled with Cabal.)
Andu
serves Valkon the Sky Lord in a temple in Sanneth, the
City in the Storm.
Crog
is a surprising encounter at the Pool of Glenmasis, although
he is more familiar with the surrounding forest than the
pool itself.
Erun
Tegraath and Nan Dur fight alongside the demons from D'Stradi,
while Fintus Talltree, Tonath, and Vond Cloven (attempting
to show people she can overcome her heritage) all fight
against them, helping to defend Inshabiv.
Hilarrin
and Olorie explore the Vale of Stars but certainly do
not work with Antat Var and Chaz Zemir, the dark elves
(from Cabal). They are interested in the elvish
history of the place.
Laal
Torrevask can be found in disguise in Sanneth, spying
on the city for a dark elf employer.
Regrin
is a close friend of Vabrin the ettin and can be found
helping in the forge from time to time.
These,
of course, are just some ideas. If you find any of the
above mysterious but of interest, you can find
all these products in electronic format for purchase.
All but Book of Eldritch Might III are available
as print products as well (Skreyn's Register: The Bonds
of Magic will be in stores the week of November 25).
The print edition of Book of Eldritch Might III: The
Nexus goes on sale in January.
