. Children of the Rune Greenbond: Galen Bock

From "The Silent Man" by Richard Lee Byers

Illus. Mark ZugCharacter stats by Richard Lee Byers

Though still a young man, Galen Bock bears considerable responsibility as the sole greenbond and healer in Kebrel's Crossing, an isolated settlement in Verdune. The 6-foot-tall greenbond is also one of the village's primary defenders against the roaming undead that infest that haunted land. With his friend, the wolf totem warrior Avard Syler, he has kept the villagers safe in recent years. But the battle grows more difficult every day.

Galen was raised and educated by the previous local greenbond, Wallendin, who used to entertain his young ward with tales of the runechild who purged the area around Kebrel's Crossing of undead a century ago. This runechild also aided Wallendin during his reckless youth. Moreso than others in the Crossing, Galen has always hoped to meet one of the mysterious heroes.

Wallendin taught Galen to always trust his instincts, even when they led him down unfamiliar and difficult roads. His frequent communion with the Green keeps him centered and offers him clarity of mind—both essential to someone who spends most of the day healing the sick and wounded and much of the night fighting undead. In gratitude for his constant protection, the villagers bring him his meals and outfit his home with the essentials of life, allowing Galen to focus on his work.

In combat Galen prefers to use icebolt and bind with plants against single targets. When fighting undead, he tries to make the most efficient use of his spells by targeting multiple assailants at once. Because the Crossing has so few warriors to fend off assaults, Galen remains in the front lines for most of the battle, stopping to heal the fallen in only the most dire circumstances.
