.Children of the Rune Unfettered: Ranald the Sly

From "Child of the Street" by Will McDermott

Character stats by Will McDermott

Illus. Mark ZugRanald the Sly is a mid-level assassin with high aspirations. Ranald has used his position in the De-Shamod Element of the Nightwalkers to make connections throughout the city with corrupt merchants and other disreputable residents. He has his claws in many nefarious operations, not all of which has he reported to the Prince of the Element.

As an enforcer in the seamy underbelly of De-Shamod during his youth, Ranald gained a reputation for being merciless and became an expert at inflicting pain with his signature blackwood staff. He rose quickly through the ranks of the Nightwalkers, eventually graduating from thug work to assassination.

While sly in temperament and in his practice of moving undetected through the city's back alleys and over its rooftops, Ranald still enjoys meeting and beating his targets face to face. He often leaves his victim's dead body behind, picked clean of any valuables, which makes the slaying look like nothing more than a common mugging. When a more clandestine assassination is required, Ranald lets the Ghostwash claim the battered corpse and wash away any evidence.

In a fight, Ranald infuses his staff with fire before moving in and powers it back up whenever he has a spare moment during the melee. While Ranald will take every chance for a sneak attack, he often prefers a stand-up battle where he can use Improved Two-Weapon Fighting to get in four attacks per round.

Although he is not an elegant killer, Ranald does enjoy the finer things in life. He wears only the finest silk shirts and suede leggings and boots, dressing always in black. He also wears two expensive rings and carries his lucky stone (an enormous 100 gp onyx) with him wherever he goes.
