Urihiel, Patron of the Order of the Golden Chalice

A Web Enhancement by Sean K Reynolds

Illus. Alan PollackA while back, someone on my message boards suggested that I post statistics for the third angel who helped found the Order of the Golden Chalice, an angel who later fell. I thought this had a cool tie to my newer book, Anger of Angels, so below you will find the angel Urihiel in both angelic and fallen form.

Urihiel, a bound angel of a god of light and life, was a principality to a human nation later overrun by undead and unloving demons. After hearing of the mighty deeds of a mortal paladin named Donas, last scion of the royal family of his chosen nation, Urihiel discussed intervening in this mortal's life with Zakafiel (an ophanite angel of creation) and Bakuryah (the hashmalite angel in charge of nurturing the soul-forges of Heaven). The three of them appeared before Donas after a battle of awful carnage, when the man's hope had ebbed to its lowest point. The angels told Donas that he would not succeed in freeing his homeland while he lived, but if he retreated and trained a host of knights in the ideals of Heaven, they would persist for 10 generations. The paladin accepted this destiny, and the three angels became the patrons of this new order (see the Order of the Golden Chalice web enhancement for Skreyn’s Register: The Bonds of Magic—Vol. II: The Faithful).

Urihiel visited the fledgling knighthood often in its early years. Like many principalities, he became very close to the mortals with whom he worked. From these relationships were born half-celestial children, most of whom joined the Order and eventually had aasimar children of their own.

Throughout the years, Urihiel always sought the destruction of undead. Many times he pointed members of the Order to pockets of undead that he’d heard about in his planar travels and research. It was this near-obsessive loathing of undead that would eventually become his downfall.

Description: Like the mortals of his bonded country, Urihiel is tall with fair skin, blond hair, and light brown eyes. His look shows wisdom and kindness, though there is nothing about his appearance that would distinguish him from the average mortal. He normally dresses in the simple robes of a scribe and a broad belt of yellow leather, though when ready for battle he wears his mithral breastplate, straps on his sword, and lets the four holy sealings fly about him like whirling stars.

Presented here is Urihiel at the apex of his angelic power. A double asterisk (**) represents a feat, spell, or item introduced in Anger of Angels.

Typical Cleric Spells Prepared (6/6+1/6+1/5+1/4+1/3+1/2+1/1+1; save DC 13 + spell level): 0--detect magic, mending, purify food anddrink x3, read magic; 1st--bless, bless water, detect undead x2, divine favor, protection from evil*, summon monster I; 2nd--align weapon, bear's endurance, bull's strength, calm emotions*, consecrate x2, status; 3rd--daylight, dispel magic, lesser manna creation** x2, magic circle against evil*, prayer; 4th--bestow grace of the champion**, dismissal, holy smite*, neutralize poison, lesser planar ally; 5th--dispel evil*, disrupting weapon, hallow, plane shift; 6th--heal, hold monster*, manna creation**; 7th--holy word*, imbue with greater spell ability**.

An asterisk (*) indicates a domain spell. Domains: Good (+1 caster level for good spells), Law (+1 caster level for lawful spells).

Possessions: +2 flaming longsword, +3 mithral breastplate (can use fly once per day, 5th-level caster), the four holy sealings (a four-part magic item similar to a set of ioun stones, which gives the bearer bonuses against called and summoned outsiders).

Advise the Attuned (Su): Urihiel can send thoughts to an allied creature or one of the citizens of his chosen nature. The range of this ability is 100 feet, but it does not give him the ability to receive responses from his target. It is a language-dependent ability.

Aura of Forgotten Presence (Su): Urihiel's principality ability allows him to hide from those he watches over, including guard animals trained to protect and defend his chosen country or its citizens. Activating or deactivating this effect is not an action and affects all appropriate creatures within 30 feet (Will save, DC 13, negates). Creatures must save every round; those who fail forget he is there and lose all memory of his presence dating back one minute. It does not affect his enemies, creatures he intends to harm, or creatures intending to harm his charges. This is an enchantment (charm) mind-affecting ability.

Heavenborn Traits: Urihiel can speak with any creature that has a language as though using a tongues spell, always active, caster level 14th; he enjoys immunity to electricity and petrification; he has a +4 bonus to Fortitude saves against poison, low-light vision, and darkvision.

Outsider Traits: Urihiel has darkvision; he cannot be raised or resurrected (though a wish or miracle spell can restore life).

Spell-Like Abilities (Sp): At will--audible whisper**, detect poison, guidance, light, know direction, resistance, virtue; 1/day--invisibility (self only), protection from evil, remove fear, spiritual weapon. Caster level 2nd. DC 11 + spell level. The DCs are Charisma based.

Steward of Nations (Su): Urihiel is a principality of the nation once ruled by the parents of Donas, founder of the Order of the Golden Chalice. While within the boundaries of that country, he gains a +1 sacred bonus to Armor Class, saves, checks, and the DC of his aura of forgotten presence (see above).

After nearly a hundred years as a sponsor of the Order, Urihiel began to hear rumors of the Tome of Pervasive Life. This artifact of unknown origin reputedly held the secret to destroying undead with a word and perhaps could even lock the doors between the mortal world and the Negative Energy Plane, preventing the creation of undead forevermore. Urihiel eventually found the tome, unaware that it was cursed, a trapped book made by an ancient deity of undeath and necromancy. Urihiel studied the book, hoping to find its secrets, unaware as he did so that it was presenting false information and secretly poisoning his mind and his life essence. In a manner of weeks, the angel went from purity to outcast to rebel and finally to fallen angel, while the book kept the symptoms of his transformation from him. By the time the change was complete, it was too late, and Urihiel had become totally evil.

Renaming himself Abadomach, the new necromancer-demon researched unlife and the interaction of divine and fiendish energies with mortals. In his research he fathered two half-fiend sons on mortal women. The first, Yastomoch, was a naturally gifted sorcerer in necromancy and became the fallen angel's trusted lieutenant. The second, Xenekarn, had no talent for magic but an uncanny awareness of the weaknesses and vulnerabilities of his living foes. While Yastomoch worked with his father, Xenekarn traveled to the southern parts of the mortal world to gather evil warriors under his banner and create a barony for himself.

By the time these two half-breeds reached adulthood, the Order of the Golden Chalice had recognized Urihiel's long absence as a fall from grace. The Order's knights searched the mortal world and the planes for Abadomach in the hope of redeeming the blighted soul of their patron. After cleaving through the undead hordes guarding the necrodemon's extraplanar castle and slaying Yastomoch, the knights confronted Abadomach with a choice: Atone, or be slain. Seeing the blood of his son and heir on their blades, Abadomach cursed them, refusing their offer of mercy, and attacked. The battle was costly to the knights, and it grieved them to partake in it. Eventually, however, they wore down the fallen angel's defenses and destroyed him. It was only years later that they heard of Xenekarn, who had continued his father's practice of breeding with mortals.

Description: The fallen Urihiel is tall and gaunt, with pale sunken skin, stringy white hair, and eyes the color of stagnant water. Small horns of white bone grow from his forehead and sweep back over the top of his head, and ringlike growths of bone circle all eleven of his fingers. His look is critical, as if he is trying to decide how much meat is on the bone of his target, and whether the target would better serve as a skeleton or a zombie. Old blood stains his tattered clothing, and his breastplate bears a symbol of two skeletal wings with shreds of flesh hanging from them.

Presented here is Abadomach in his full demonic form before he was destroyed at the hands of the Order of the Golden Chalice. A double asterisk (**) indicates a feat or spell from Anger of Angels. A pound sign (#) indicates an ability from the outcast, rebellious, or fallen angel templates which removes or changes one of the base creature's abilities. The effects of these abilities are already included in the stat block below.

An asterisk (*) indicates a domain spell. Domains: Chaos (+1 caster level for chaotic spells), Evil (+1 caster level for evil spells).

Possessions: +2 flaming longsword, +3 mithral breastplate (can use fly once per day, 5th-level caster), the four holy sealings (a four-part magic item similar to a set of ioun stones, which gives the bearer bonuses against called and summoned outsiders).

Advise the Attuned (Su): Abadomach can send thoughts to an allied creature or one of the citizens of his chosen nature. The range of this ability is 100 feet, but it does not give him the ability to receive responses from his target. It is a language-dependent ability.

Aura of Forgotten Presence (Su): Abadomach’s principality ability allows him to become hidden from those citizens he watches over, including guard animals trained to protect and defend his chosen country or its citizens. Activating or deactivating this effect is not an action and affects all appropriate creatures within 30 feet (Will DC 13+1 negates). Creatures must save every round, and those who fail forget he is there and lose all memory of his presence dating back one minute. It does not affect his enemies, creatures he intends to harm, or creatures intending to harm his charges. This is an enchantment (charm) mind-affecting ability.

Demon Traits: Abadomach can communicate telepathically with any creature within 100 feet.

Heavenborn Traits: Abadomach enjoys immunity to electricity and petrification; he has a +4 bonus to Fortitude saves against poison, low-light vision, and darkvision.

Outsider Traits: Abadomach has darkvision; he cannot be raised or resurrected (though a wish or miracle spell can restore life).

Spell-Like Abilities (Sp): At will--audible whisper**, detect poison, guidance, light, know direction, resistance, virtue; 1/day-invisibility (self only), protection from good, remove fear, spiritual weapon. Caster level 2nd. DC 12 + spell level. The DCs are Charisma based.

Steward of Nations (Su): Abadomach is a principality of the country once ruled by the parents of Donas, founder of the Order of the Golden Chalice. When within the boundaries of that nation, he gains a +1 profane bonus to Armor Class, saves, checks, and the DC of his aura of forgotten presence (see above).

** Technically Urihiel is no longer an Angel of Sanctification. However, a demon prince granted him a similar but opposite ability, granting him a profane bonus to Armor Class, saves, and turning checks against undead and allowing him to use a spell called lesser unhallowing as a spell-like ability.
