The Year's Best d20 presents a unique collection of spells, monsters, classes, feats, and variant rules that illustrates the d20 System's flexibility. The contents, drawn from a thorough examination of products released in 2004, represents a variety of authors and publishers. This invaluable reference book is also a treasure trove of material suitable for any campaign.
What is it?
A 96-page softbound book coming from Malhavoc Press.
What does it cover?
Any d20 System or OGL product released in 2004 is eligible for inclusion in this collection. (Malhavoc Press products are excluded from consideration.) For specifics, please see the submissions rules.
Monte introduces each selection with a short introduction explaining why he chose to include it and what makes it noteworthy. In his prologue to the book, Monte also offers an insightful overview on the year in gaming.
Why is Malhavoc Press doing it?
The sheer volume of d20 System products -- many with small print runs and low profiles-makes it impossible for a person to find out about them all, let alone read them all. That's why this collection of The Year's Best d20 game material is great for roleplayers who want the cream of what the industry has to offer.
Within these pages, readers also have the opportunity to discover new game designers and publishers of small press titles.
Why should a company submit a product for consideration?
Appearing in a collection that showcases excellence in the d20 industry is great publicity for your products and grants companies excellent exposure to new potential customers. Selection by Monte Cook, veteran game designer and winner of such industry awards as the Origins Award, EN World d20 System Award, InQuest Gamer's Choice Award, and the Pen & Paper Fan Award, is a credible critical mark of excellence for a roleplaying product.
What's in it?
See the book's table of contents, which lists all the contributing authors and represented products and publishers.
Are there other books like this on the market?
Yes. The Year's Best Science Fiction and The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror, both from St. Martin's Griffin, have been published annually for many years, as has the annual Spectrum collection of the best in fantastic art (from Underwood Books). Other similar annual collections include Best American Short Stories.

The Year's Best I get asked for my opinion
on various d20 books a lot. It's understandable, because there's a lot of stuff
out there and it's nigh impossible for a lone DM to know what to use in his
campaign or for a player to know how to find the good options for his character. |
