Monte Cook's Arcana Unearthed Sneak Peek
We are
really lucky to have had so many terrific artists to illustrate
Arcana Unearthed,
and we're pleased to unveil some of the first pieces in
this sneak peek. The fantastic work of Sam
Wood, David
Hendee, Toren "MacBin"
Atkinson, and others has really brought to life my vision
for this book. Below are six pieces from the book, along
with some design commentary from me to help put them into
context. Click on each image to see a larger version.

Warmains
by Sam Wood
This
illustration shows us two warmains. These
are the heavy warriors of the game-- they
use heavy weapons, wear heavy armor, and are
trained to take a lot of punishment. They
are also the warriors most concentrated on
strategy and military tactics. These two are
a human and a giant. They look like they're
ready for about anything.

Magisters
by David Hendee
Here
we have two magisters, a human and a faen.
Magisters focus their spells through their
staves. They look at magic almost like a science
-- something that comes through careful study
of formulas and procedures.

Tattooed
Spell by Sam Wood
This
piece shows a new ceremonial feat called Tattooed
Spell. It allows the recipient to gain a minor spell-like
ability based within a magical tattoo. Here we see
a spryte giving a tattoo to a quickling faen. If
you had any suspicions that faen were just renamed
halflings, this illustration should put those to
rest!

Attack
from Within by Toren "MacBin" Atkinson
Here
we see the effects of a new spell called attack
from within. It summons a chosen element or
energy type (depending on which spell is chosen)
right inside a single target, inflicing terrible
damage upon him and possibly even those nearby.

Ceremony
by Sam Wood
Here
we see a great illustration of a ceremony
taking place. I've mentioned before that
ceremonies are very important in Arcana
Unearthed and the setting it implies.
The central figure is a giant, and the rest
are humans.

Totem
Warriors by Sam Wood
As
this piece illustrates, totem warriors gain
their powers from a particular animal totem.
Here we see a litorian bear totem warrior
following some tracks, and a human hawk
totem warrior. Note the human's hawk totem
animal companion. Hawk totem warriors make
great archers.
