New
Low-Cost Upgrades to Convert 9 Titles in 2004
January
22, 2004 (Renton, Wash.)Starting today, Malhavoc
Press is making available upgrades that convert some of
its best-selling electronic products to v. 3.5 of the
d20 System rules, said Malhavoc owner Monte Cook.
The
first titles to be updated are the three volumes of the
Book of Eldritch Might series. Malhavoc also will
release upgrades this year for The
Book of Hallowed Might, its two Skreyn's
Register character books (The Bonds of Magic:
Cabal and The Bonds of Magic: The Faithful),
and its three psionic sourcebooks (If
Thoughts Could Kill, Mindscapes:
A Psion's Guide, and Mindscapes:
Beasts of the Id).
"Thousands
of fans have bought these PDFs over the years," Monte
said. "We wanted to make sure they had the most up-to-date
rules available for some of our most popular books. And
updating your copy of the book is very easy with these
upgrades -- that's one of the great things about PDF as
a publishing medium."
The
upgrades, listed in the release schedule below, are available
via Malhavoc's online
catalog.
The
scheduled upgrades are for Windows users only. Mac versions
are not available at present.
An
upgrade is like a patch file you download, unzip, then
execute. It automatically changes your PDF copy of a book
to reflect the changes made in the newest edition of that
PDF. You must have previously purchased the electronic
edition of the book in order for the upgrade to work.
(Buying the upgrade is not the same thing as buying the
book.)
Customers
purchasing any of the listed books for the first time
on or after the upgrade release date will be purchasing
the v. 3.5-compatible edition of the book. This edition
of the book does not require a upgrade but comes already
updated.
Malhavoc
has released free patches in the past to correct errata
and update the graphic design of several books. However,
these new upgrades carry a small price to offset the cost
of converting the rules. "This isn't something as
simple as correcting a few typos or modifying the layout,"
Monte said. "We have spent weeks of design time on
these updates. We know fans will find it reasonable to
pay a little bit to reap the benefits of that work."
For
fans who prefer traditional bound books to electronic
ones, new print volumes in 2004 update the print editions
of some Malhavoc books to v. 3.5. These include the Books
of Eldritch Might (updated in The Complete Book
of Eldritch Might*), The Book of Hallowed Might
(updated in The Book of Hallowed Might, v. 3.5
revision*), and If Thoughts Could Kill and Mindscapes
(updated in Hyperconscious*, available September).
Malhavoc

Cook's Arcana Unearthed variant player's handbook.
Its first release was the award-winning Book

These print volumes contain some all-new sections, such
as guidelines for using the books with Monte Cook's
Arcana Unearthed. The corresponding upgrades only
update the rules of the original PDF edition of the books
to v.3.5 of the d20 System. The upgrades do not contain
these all-new sections.
